其中,在MOCVD设备领域,领头羊包括Aixtron(市场份额约55%至70%),Veeco(市场份额约15%至35%),Nippon Sanso(市场份额约5%至10%),以及国内MOCVD设备厂商(例如Cree)。其他欲挤入MOCVD市场的公司包括应用材料(AMAT)、Jusung Engineering, Tokyo Electron, Ulvac, SAMCO, ADP, IPS, KOPTI, and SEMES等。

  “第二种技术——CCS(Closed Coupled Showerhead)反应器是Aixtron在1999年收购Thomas Swan时引入的。

Report: Cree to bid on Axitron

  Mark LaPedus

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Cree Inc. ''might'' make a buyout offer for Axitron AG, an LED equipment maker, according to a report from Reuters.

Observers are scratching their heads about the rumor. A buyout offer makes little or no sense. U.S.-based Cree makes devices, LEDs and other products. Axitron makes MOCVD gear for the production of LEDs.

For some time, there have been rumors that Applied Materials Inc. would buy an MOCVD firm, possibly Veeco. Applied''s MOVCD tool developments are late to the LED party.

LEDs are hot in various markets. And China is a new driving force in LEDs and LED gear demand. ''China has specifically targeted LED adoption not only as a means of dramatically reducing energy and electricity consumption, but to also fuel an emerging domestic LED industry,'' said C.J. Muse, an analyst with Barclays Capital, in a recent report.

''To this end, the Chinese government has been targeting both the demand and the supply side of the equation. On the supply side, the government has been offering local LED companies substantial subsidies for LED equipment (from Aixtron, Veeco and other suppliers),'' he said.

''On the demand side, the government initially instituted a program to replace the lighting in 10,000 streetlamps in 10 Chinese cities to LEDs. This effort was expanded in 2009 to the goal of 1 million LED municipal lights in over 20 cities, with the government specifying that 60 percent of these LED lights need to be made in China and that the efforts should result in ~220M KWh of electricity saved,'' he said.

Aixtron and Veeco are the clear leaders in MOCVD. ''MOCVD tools account for over 50 percent of LED equipment spending. Market share leaders in the segment include Aixtron (55-70 percent typical market share), Veeco (15-35 percent typical market share), Nippon Sanso (5-10 percent typical market share), and internally manufactured MOCVD tools (e.g., Cree). Other entrants currently attempting to enter the MOCVD market include Applied Materials, Jusung Engineering, Tokyo Electron, Ulvac, SAMCO, ADP, IPS, KOPTI, and SEMES, '' Muse said.

''We estimate that Aixtron’s market share will stabilize at ~55 percent in 2011, with Veeco’s share reaching ~40 percent, as Veeco builds on its current traction in China due to the earlier introduction of its K465i tool (China demand likely evenly split between Veeco and Aixtron verses heavier skewing towards Aixtron in Taiwan) and China MOCVD demand reaches ~63 percent of the mix in 2011,'' he said.

''Aixtron’s MOCVD technology has taken two separate routes – planetary reactors and closed coupled showerhead reactors. Aixtron licensed its planetary reactor technology from Philips in 1989. The technology entails introducing the precursor/carrier gases on one end of the reaction chamber; the gases flow/react across the surface of the spinning wafers, with the waste gases exiting through the exhaust on the other end of the chamber,'' he said.

The second technology path – close coupled showerhead – was purchased by Aixtron in its acquisition of Thomas Swan in 1999. Under this configuration, the precursors/carrier gases are introduced into the reaction chamber through a water-cooled showerhead above the wafers. The wafers in turn are positioned on top of a rotating wafer carrier,'' he said.

''Veeco’s MOCVD technology stems from its 2003 purchase from Emcore. The TurboDisc technology consists of a high-speed rotating disc which holds multiple wafers. The precursor/carrier gases are introduced vertically into the reaction chamber, with the reaction occurring near the wafer surface rather than near the injector surface,'' he added.[NT:PAGE=原文$]
