　　The new M.D. Anderson cancer Center is located in the campus of Banner Gateway Medical Center, has the most advanced medical equipment.76 rooms, more than 300 employees dedicated to cancer treatment.A 133,000 - square - foot facility is designed to provide personalized, comprehensive treatment of patients. Three-story cancer center to accommodate the internal medicine clinic, medical imaging and radiation oncology, perfusion therapy, and other major patient care services.

　　Positioned at the entry of the new oncology center, the Lantern’s vivid, uniform glow serves as a beacon of hope and a symbol of the hospital’s steadfast commitment to the eradication of cancer. The panels cladding the structure – cut to represent the canopy of the Palo Verde or “nurse” tree – filter dappled sunlight to the entry and balconies through a fabric scrim by day, and are backlit by grazing the fabric with light to create an inspiring visual icon at night.

　　“Whilst color can often be over utilized, here it is used in a subtle and appropriate way,” one judge commented.“The skilled execution and the design composition of silhouette lighting of the vertical tower and the even wash of the horizontal awning create a beautiful image of the building.”

　　With accessibility, maintenance and longevity in mind, robust yet small scale IP66 luminaires with long-life LEDs were selected to withstand the harsh desert climate. Luminaires are located in a double row at the base of the four-story panel spans and in a single row at the bottom of the single-story spans. Maintainable from the balconies, the upper luminaires are dimmed to a level that allows their output to seamlessly match that of the lower level’s reach.

　　Playful contrast of light and shadow provides a softly luminous space of transition to the building during the day. Relaxing vantage points for the ever-changing natural light show are offered from adjacent second and third floor balconies.

　　Narrow optic, high-output, RBG color-changing LEDs met the design challenges of reach, energy efficiency and control. A DMX control package with client-driven presets allows the owner to use the Lantern to communicate cancer awareness months, holidays and special events through smoothly fading color and kinesis.Special diffusing film applied to the lensing aides in the blending of the RBG created colors at each panel base. Generally, the Lantern will glow in lavender - the universal color for cancer awareness.
